  In a classroom of forty students, I was the gray wallpaper—there, but nobody noticed. My grades were average. I never raised my hand.   She had a habit of reading students’ essays aloud. One Tuesday, she picked up my notebook. My heart stopped. She adjusted her glasses and began: “The old banyan tree in our schoolyard is like a grandfather. His roots are his wrinkles, and his leaves are his memories.” She paused and looked at me. “Who wrote this?” I raised my hand, trembling. “This is beautiful,” she said. “You have a poet’s eye.” The whole class turned to look at me. For the first time, I wasn’t invisible. 

  After class, Ms. Lin asked me to stay. “Why don’t you speak more in class?” she asked gently. “I’m not smart enough,” I mumbled. She pulled out a small notebook from her desk. “This was mine when I was your age,” she said. “I was also shy. But I wrote down everything I saw. Words became my voice. You have that same gift.” She gave me the notebook. “Write one page every day. Show me when you’re ready.” I took the notebook home and filled it with poems, stories, and even silly drawings. By the end of the year, I won the school writing contest. Ms. Lin clapped the loudest. She taught me that a teacher’s job is not to fill a bucket, but to light a fire. She saw the quiet girl in the third row, and she handed me a mirror so I could see myself too.
