Grandma’s parrot, Coco, was green with a yellow head and a bad attitude. He could not talk. He only screeched and bit fingers. Most of my cousins were afraid of him. But I saw something in his eyes—curiosity, maybe loneliness. I decided to teach him to speak.
Every day after school, I went to Grandma’s house. I stood in front of Coco’s cage and said the same word over and over: “Hello.” Coco stared at me, tilted his head, and screeched. I did not give up. I brought him sunflower seeds as rewards. For weeks, nothing. My brother laughed. “That bird is dumb,” he said. But I kept going. I repeated “hello” five hundred times, a thousand times. I started saying it in different voices—high, low, slow, fast. Coco would flap his wings but no sound. One afternoon, I was tired. I sat on the floor, resting my head on the cage. “Hello,” I whispered, almost to myself. Then I heard it. A small, scratchy voice: “Heh-woh.”
I jumped up. “Grandma! Grandma! Coco talked!” Coco looked at me and said it again, clearer this time: “Hello.” His voice sounded like an old door creaking, but it was the most beautiful sound. Grandma came running, tears in her eyes. “My husband taught Coco to say ‘hello’ before he passed away. But after he died, Coco stopped talking. You brought his voice back.” I hugged the cage (carefully). Coco did not bite me. He rubbed his head against my finger. That day, I learned that patience is not waiting; it is showing up every day even when nothing happens. Coco taught me that love is a language that does not need words, but sometimes, if you try hard enough, the words will come. Now, every time I visit, Coco says, “Hello.” And I say it back. It is our secret handshake.
