  “A puppet show?” Our group of four stared at each other. It was the school art festival, and we had to perform something. Lily wanted to sing, Mike wanted to dance, I wanted to act, and Sara wanted to do magic. We argued for twenty minutes.   We decided to retell the story of “The Monkey King”. I was in charge of making puppets. I cut cardboard into shapes of monkeys, pigs, and monks. My fingers were covered in glue and paint. Lily wrote the script, but she made the monkey speak like a pop star. Mike argued that it was not traditional. Sara said we needed music. We fought again. One afternoon, Mike threw his puppet on the floor and said, “I quit!” I picked up the puppet. “We can’t quit. We are a team.” We sat down and listened to each other. Lily agreed to change some lines. Mike learned to play a small drum. Sara made a shadow screen from an old bedsheet. I painted the puppets with glowing stars. 

  On performance day, the lights went dark. Behind the screen, our hands were shaking. I held the monkey puppet, Mike beat the drum, Lily spoke the lines, and Sara pulled the strings. The audience of parents and kids laughed at the funny parts and gasped at the fighting scenes. When the monkey king defeated the demon, everyone clapped. We took a bow, our faces sweaty but smiling. After the show, we hugged. “We did it!” Lily shouted. I learned that a group of ordinary kids can create something magical when they stop fighting and start listening. The puppet show was not perfect, but it was ours. And the best part was not the applause; it was the moment we decided to work together.
