  It was a stormy night. The rain was hitting the windows like tiny hammers. I heard a soft whimper outside. Opening the door, I saw a small, muddy dog shivering under the porch light. His fur was matted, and one ear flopped down. He looked up at me with big, sad eyes. “You can’t stay,” I whispered, but my heart said something else.

  I sneaked him a bowl of milk and a towel to sleep on. In the morning, my mother was not happy. “We can’t keep a stray dog,” she said. But the dog—I started calling him Lucky—followed me everywhere that day. He rested his head on my shoes while I did homework. He wagged his tail whenever I looked at him. That evening, Lucky did something amazing. My little brother wandered too close to the street, and a car was coming fast. Lucky ran and barked loudly, scaring my brother back to the sidewalk. My mother’s eyes widened. “He saved him,” she breathed. 

  Lucky became a member of our family. I learned that having a pet is not just about playing. It’s about feeding him on time, cleaning up after him, and taking him to the vet when he is sick. One night, Lucky had a fever. I stayed up with him, putting cold cloths on his forehead. He licked my hand weakly, thanking me. In return, Lucky gave me something priceless: every day when I come home from school, he waits by the door, his tail spinning like a helicopter. His joy reminds me that love does not need fancy words. Lucky chose me that rainy night, and I will be his human forever.
