  Every day after school, I buy a pack of milk from the school store. The owner, Auntie Liu, is usually friendly. But one day, I saw something that made my heart sink. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the little boy’s trusting face. On the third day, I saw Auntie Liu do it again, to another kid. That was it. I walked to the principal’s office. My hands were sweaty, and my voice was a whisper. “Mr. Li, I need to tell you something.” 

  I explained everything. The principal listened without interrupting. He thanked me and said he would investigate. The next day, an announcement was made: the school store would be closed for a week for “retraining”. Auntie Liu came to my classroom. I was scared she would be angry. Instead, she said quietly, “You did the right thing. I am sorry.” She returned the money to the little boys. That afternoon, I saw the first-grader buying a popsicle with his returned five yuan. He smiled a big, toothless smile. I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. Speaking the truth is like pulling out a thorn—it hurts for a second, but then the healing begins. I learned that justice is not a big word for superheroes. It is a small choice that ordinary people make, every day, even when they are scared.
