  “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Everyone asks this question. My classmates say pilot, doctor, or YouTuber. I always give a different answer: “I want to be a storykeeper.” They look confused. So let me explain.

  My grandfather is a storyteller. He doesn’t write books. He sits under the old locust tree in our village, and children gather around him. He tells tales of floods and famines, of a tiger that once roamed the nearby mountain, of how our village got its name. His voice is like an old river—sometimes slow, sometimes fast, but always carrying something precious. Last summer, he told me a story I had never heard: about his own mother, who walked fifty kilometers to sell eggs so he could go to school. When he finished, tears were in his eyes. “One day, I will be gone,” he said. “And the stories will go with me if no one listens.” 

  That night, I decided. I will become a storykeeper. I will carry a small recorder and visit old people in nursing homes, in villages, in quiet city apartments. I will ask them: “What did your grandmother cook for you? What did the sky look like on the day you fell in love? What song did your father sing when you were scared?” I will write down their words, draw their memories, and save them in a digital library. Someday, a child will read those stories and know that their great-great-grandmother once laughed at a butterfly, once cried over a lost ring, once dreamed of flying. Scientists discover the future, but storykeepers save the past. And without the past, the future has no roots. So when I grow up, you won’t find me in an office or a hospital. You will find me sitting on a porch, listening to an old voice, holding a pen. I will be the one who makes sure no story ever truly dies.
