  Xiao Ming came to our class in March. He spoke with a rural accent, and some kids laughed when he said “ship” instead of “sheep”. I was not a brave kid. I usually sat in the back and kept quiet.   Xiao Ming had signed up to recite a poem about his village. When he stood on stage, his hands were shaking. Someone from the audience imitated his accent, and a few kids giggled. Xiao Ming’s face turned red. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out. I saw tears forming in his eyes. My heart pounded, but before I knew it, I stood up from my seat. “Stop!” I shouted. The whole gymnasium went silent. I walked onto the stage, my legs like jelly. “I will recite with him,” I said into the microphone. 

  I looked at Xiao Ming. “Let’s do it together.” We took a deep breath and began. His voice was soft at first, but as we spoke, it grew stronger. We described the morning fog over his village, the sound of frogs at night, and the smell of rice harvest. When we finished, the audience was quiet for a second, then exploded into applause. After that day, no one laughed at Xiao Ming anymore. He became my best friend. He taught me how to fish for loaches in the stream, and I helped him with English. Being brave does not mean being strong; it means standing up for someone even when your knees are shaking. That day, the shy kid became the unlikely hero, and I learned that courage is contagious.
