  In my pencil case, there is a yellow pencil that is only four centimeters long. It is too short to hold properly. My classmates laugh when they see it. “Why don’t you throw it away?” they ask.   I got this pencil on my first day of first grade. It was long and sharp, with a shiny eraser. Over the years, it has written countless words: spelling tests, diary entries, love letters to my mom, and sad notes after fights with friends. Every time it got too short, I would attach a pencil extender—a little plastic tube my dad made. I have used four extenders already. This pencil has seen me cry over math and laugh over jokes. Its yellow paint is chipped. The eraser is long gone. But when I hold it, I feel the weight of six years of learning. 

  One day, my desk mate accidentally knocked the pencil onto the floor and stepped on it. It broke into two pieces. I picked up the pieces, my heart hurting. “I’m sorry,” she said. “It’s okay,” I said. “It had a good life.” But I didn’t throw it away. I kept the longer piece—about two centimeters—in my pencil case. I don’t write with it anymore. It is a mascot. It reminds me that even when you become small, you still have value. It reminds me to use things until they are truly empty. Most importantly, it reminds me that persistence is not about being the longest or the sharpest; it is about showing up every day until you have nothing left to give. When I finish primary school, I will put this pencil in a small box. Someday, when I feel like giving up, I will take it out and remember: if a two-centimeter pencil can still dream of writing, so can I.
