  The blue vase sat on the corner of the living room shelf. It was my mother’s favorite, a gift from her own mother. One careless afternoon, I was chasing my cat, Whiskers. I jumped to catch him, and my elbow hit the shelf.   My heart pounded like a drum. I quickly swept the pieces into a bag and hid it under my bed. When Mom came home, she asked, “Where is my vase?” I looked at the floor and lied, “I... I don’t know. Maybe the cat broke it.” That night, I could not sleep. The broken vase haunted me. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the blue shards. I felt a heavy stone in my stomach. Lying felt worse than breaking the vase. 

  The next morning, I took the bag of pieces and walked to my mother. Tears were already rolling down my cheeks. “Mom, I’m sorry. I broke it, and I lied. I was scared.” I handed her the bag, waiting for her anger. Instead, she knelt down and hugged me tightly. “I am sad about the vase,” she said softly. “But I am proud of you for telling the truth. A vase can be replaced; honesty cannot.” We glued the pieces back together. The vase now has cracks, but they look like lightning bolts—reminding me that mistakes can be mended, but lies leave deeper cracks. That mistake was the best teacher I ever had. It taught me that courage is not about being perfect; it is about being honest when it is hardest.
