  The fifty-yuan note lay on the floor of the stationery store, half hidden under a shelf of notebooks. I picked it up. My heart did a little dance. With fifty yuan, I could buy the new dinosaur model I had wanted for months. I looked around. The store owner was busy with another customer. No one had seen me.

  I slipped the note into my pocket. My hand was shaking. As I walked toward the exit, a little girl tugged at her mother’s sleeve. “Mom, I lost my fifty yuan! It was for the art competition entry fee.” Her eyes were red. The mother sighed and searched her bag. “Are you sure you brought it?” My feet froze. The money in my pocket suddenly felt like a burning coal. I stood there for what felt like five years, but it was probably only five minutes. I could walk out. No one would know. But the little girl’s sniffles echoed in my ears. 

  I turned around. My legs were heavy, but I walked to the girl. “Excuse me,” I said, pulling out the note. “I found this on the floor. Is it yours?” The girl’s face lit up like a lamp. “Yes! Thank you, thank you!” She grabbed the money and ran to the register to pay for her entry. The mother smiled at me. “You are an honest child.” I walked out of the store without the dinosaur model. But I felt lighter than air. That night, I told my mom what happened. She didn’t scold me for almost keeping it. Instead, she hugged me. “You made the right choice,” she said. “And that is harder than buying any toy.” The longest five minutes of my life taught me that honesty is not about being caught; it is about choosing to do the right thing when no one is watching. The dinosaur model stayed in the store, but I gained something that shines brighter: a clear conscience.
