  In my grandfather’s workshop, the air always smells of pine wood and old stories. Last winter, he decided to build me a wooden boat. “Not a toy,” he said, his hands rough like tree bark. “A boat that carries memories.”

  Every afternoon, I sat beside him on a small stool. He chose a piece of cedar wood, running his fingers over its lines. “This tree grew for fifty years,” he whispered. “Now it will sail.” I watched him trace the shape of a boat on the wood with a pencil. His hands were slow but sure. He cut, sanded, and glued. Sometimes he would stop and close his eyes, as if listening to the wood speak. One evening, he carved a tiny sun on the bow. “For good luck,” he smiled. The boat had two seats—one for me and one for my imaginary friend. 

  When it was finally finished, he took me to the small pond behind his house. The boat floated perfectly. The setting sun turned the water into gold. “You see,” Grandpa said, “a boat is like a family. It keeps you afloat even in stormy water.” I pushed the boat gently, and it sailed toward the middle of the pond, carrying a little piece of my grandpa’s heart. That night, I placed the wooden boat on my bedside table. Whenever I miss him, I touch the tiny carved sun, and I can still smell the pine wood and feel his love surrounding me.
