  As we turn the corner, the sound hits us first: “Fresh tofu! Two for a dollar!” “Sweet melons, try one!” The vegetable sellers sit on small stools, their hands busy arranging green onions and red peppers. The ground is wet from washing greens. I take my friend Li’s hand and pull her through the crowd. We stop at a steaming cart. The grandma inside is making jianbing—a crispy pancake with egg and sauce. The sizzle of the batter on the hot pan sounds like morning rain. “Add extra pickles,” I tell her. She smiles, revealing two gold teeth. 

  Next, we pass the fish section. The air smells of river water and ice. A young man shouts, “Carp, just caught today!” The fish flip their tails, splashing water. My friend covers her nose, but I love this smell—it is the smell of life. We buy some bamboo shoots from a farmer whose hands are stained with soil. He tells us he woke up at 3 a.m. to pick them. “The best shoots come before sunrise,” he says. 

  As the sun climbs higher, the market gets busier. Old ladies bargain loudly. Children chase each other between legs. A rooster crows from a cage. My friend says, “This is not just a market. This is a stage.” She is right. The morning market is where my hometown breathes, laughs, and lives. It is chaotic, noisy, and perfect. When I leave for middle school in another city, I will miss this sound—the sound of my roots.
