  We sat in the kitchen, the window open to the night sky. The moon was a perfect silver coin. Grandpa mixed flour and golden syrup, his arms moving in slow circles. “Your grandmother made the best mooncakes,” he said softly. “During the war, she was separated from her family. Every Mid-Autumn, she would make a mooncake and break it into two pieces—one for her, one for the memory of home.” I watched as he pressed the dough into a wooden mold carved with a rabbit. “Now I teach you, so the promise continues.” 

  I carefully wrapped the sweet red bean paste in the dough, but my first attempt looked like a lumpy potato. Grandpa laughed, his eyes crinkling. “Patience, little one. A mooncake is like a hug—it needs gentleness.” I tried again, and this time it was round and smooth. We baked them in the oven, and soon the kitchen filled with a sweet, buttery smell. When they came out golden brown, I felt proud. That night, the whole family sat on the balcony, eating my mooncakes. Grandma, now in a wheelchair, took a bite and tears rolled down her cheeks. “Just like home,” she whispered. I looked at the full moon and made a promise: every year, I will make mooncakes. I will keep the family story alive, one mooncake at a time.
