  I remember the first day I planted tomato seeds. The soil was cool and crumbly between my fingers. For days, nothing happened. I almost gave up. Then one dewy morning, I saw two tiny green leaves pushing through the dark soil like curious children peeking out from under a blanket. I shouted with joy. 

  As the plants grew, I learned to water them just enough, to pull out the greedy weeds, and to build little fences to protect them from naughty cats. One afternoon, a heavy rainstorm hit. I ran outside with an old umbrella and held it over my precious plants, getting soaked myself. My mother laughed and said, “You are a real little gardener.” That summer, I picked ten juicy, red tomatoes. They tasted like sunshine and hard work. My secret garden taught me that good things take time, and the sweetest rewards come from patience and love.
