  The hospital room was white and quiet. I was stuck there for two weeks because of pneumonia. The window showed only a gray wall. I missed my school, my friends, and the taste of my mom’s cooking.   Her hands were thin, but they moved like magic. She took a piece of white paper and folded it again and again. Soon, a small crane stood on her palm. “In Japan,” she whispered, “if you fold a thousand cranes, your wish comes true.” I didn’t believe in wishes, but I had nothing else to do. I took a piece of blue paper. My first crane looked like a crumpled ball. Lily laughed softly and showed me again. “Be patient,” she said. “Each fold is a small hope.” 

  Day by day, we folded cranes together. Pink, yellow, green, orange. We strung them on threads and hung them above our beds. The white room became a rainbow forest. I forgot about the beeping machines and the needle pricks. On the tenth day, I folded my one-hundredth crane—a perfect red one. Lily clapped. “You are getting better,” she said. And she was right. The next week, the doctor said I could go home. Before leaving, I looked at our cranes. “Take them,” Lily said. “Give them to other kids who feel scared.” I did. I gave a yellow crane to a crying boy in the emergency room, and a green one to an old woman who missed her cat. I never reached a thousand, but I learned that hope is not magic—it is a choice. Every paper crane I fold now carries a piece of that hospital room, reminding me that even in white silence, we can create color.
