  The kitchen had always been my mother’s kingdom. I was just a visitor who opened the fridge for juice. But last month, Mom came down with a bad cold.   I decided on tomato scrambled eggs—the simplest dish I could think of. I took out two eggs and a tomato. The first egg cracked beautifully. The second one, however, exploded. Shell pieces fell into the bowl like tiny boats. I fished them out with my fingers, feeling the slimy egg white. When I poured the eggs into the hot oil, they sizzled loudly and turned brown too quickly. I panicked and stirred wildly. By the time I added the tomatoes, the eggs were already burnt around the edges. The dish looked like a mess—black, red, and yellow mixed together. 

  I carried the plate to Mom, my head hung low. “I’m sorry. It’s terrible.” Mom sat up slowly, picked up her chopsticks, and took a big bite. She chewed, then smiled. “This is the best scrambled eggs I’ve ever had,” she said. I knew she was lying, but her eyes were sincere. “Why?” I asked. “Because you made it with love,” she whispered, patting my hand. That night, I ate the burnt eggs myself. They were bitter and salty. But Mom’s words were sweet. I realized that growing up means stepping into the kitchen not to make perfect food, but to serve imperfect love. The next week, I practiced making eggs every day. Now I can make a perfect plate. But I will never forget the first burnt one—it was the egg I never ate, but the lesson I will always digest.
