  When I was younger, I was afraid of the dark. The shadows in my room looked like monsters. Every night, I pulled the blanket over my head. Then one evening, my father came into my room and turned off the light. Before I could scream, he turned on a small flashlight and placed his hand between the light and the wall. A rabbit appeared. “See?” he said. “Shadows are not scary. They are just waiting for you to give them a story.”

  From that night on, I became a shadow puppeteer. Before bed, I would sit on my bed, point my desk lamp at the wall, and use my hands to create animals and people. A bird was easy: cross your thumbs, flap your fingers. A dog took practice: one hand for the head, the other for the ears. A dragon was the hardest—I needed both hands and a piece of cardboard. I told stories to myself: a brave rabbit escaping a fox, a bird flying to the moon, a little girl who found a castle in the clouds. My shadow world was full of adventures. I forgot about the darkness. The monsters in the corner turned into trees and mountains in my stories. 

  One night, my little sister came into my room, crying because she was scared. I sat her down and showed her how to make a butterfly. She laughed when the butterfly kissed her shadow nose. “Dark is not scary,” she said. “Dark is the stage.” I smiled. My father was right. Shadows are not enemies; they are friends who can become anything you imagine. Now I am older, and I don’t need the flashlight every night. But sometimes, when I am stressed about exams, I still make a shadow rabbit on the wall. It reminds me that creativity is the best light in the darkest room. And the best part? A shadow puppet costs nothing, weighs nothing, and never runs out of batteries.
