  We met at the old bridge. The river below looked sad. It was greenish-brown, and the surface was dotted with plastic bags floating like jellyfish. We put on rubber gloves and waded into the shallow edge. The first thing I pulled out was a shoe. Then a broken toy. Then a tangled fishing net with a dead fish trapped inside. Its glassy eye stared at nothing. My stomach turned. “How can people do this?” I whispered. A girl next to me, Li, said, “They don’t see it. They just throw and forget.” 

  For three hours, we filled thirty big trash bags. We found batteries, diapers, even a small TV. By the end, my back ached and my gloves were torn. But when I looked back, the riverbank looked cleaner. The water seemed to sparkle a little. A bird landed on a rock. That small moment gave me hope. I decided not to stop. At school, I started a “Litter-Free Lunch” club. We asked everyone to use reusable containers. Within a month, our cafeteria trash was cut in half. I also wrote a letter to the mayor, asking for more public trash bins. He wrote back and said, “Your voice matters.” The river did not become clean overnight. But every week, a few more people join our cleanup. I learned that you don’t have to save the whole world; you just have to save your small part of it. And if everyone does that, the world will be saved. I am not just a student anymore. I am a river guardian.
