My grandfather had a stroke last year. After that, he could not speak. He could only make small sounds and move his right hand. The first time I visited him in the hospital, I didn’t know what to say. I just sat there, watching him stare at the ceiling. It felt like a wall had grown between us. 中小学语文阅读作文辅导 ,(线上、线下) TEL:184-5229-8565 易优作文专业、可靠 www.euzw.net
Then one day, I brought a deck of cards. Grandpa loved playing cards before. I held up a card—the king of hearts. He blinked twice. I didn’t know what that meant. Then he tapped his finger on the bed twice. Tap, tap. I realized: one tap for yes, two taps for no. “Do you want to play cards?” One tap. Yes. My heart jumped. We started a new language. Two blinks meant “I love you.” Three taps on the pillow meant “water.” A raised eyebrow meant “tell me a story.” I learned to read his face like a book. Soon, we could have whole conversations without a single word. I would tell him about my school, and he would respond with taps and eye movements. Sometimes he would laugh silently, his shoulders shaking.
Last month, I took him outside to the hospital garden. The roses were blooming. I pointed to a red one. “Do you remember when you taught me to plant roses?” One tap. He looked at the flower, then at me. He raised his left hand slowly—the hand that was weaker—and touched my cheek. Then he blinked twice. I knew what it meant: “I love you.” I started to cry, but they were happy tears. Grandpa cannot speak anymore, but he speaks louder than ever. His language is made of patience and touch. He taught me that words are just one way to say things. The most important messages are sent through the heart. Now, when I visit him, we don’t need a translator. We have our own secret language, and it is beautiful.
