  The elevator doors closed with a soft sigh. I was on my way home from buying milk. A little girl from the 8th floor, about five years old, was in the elevator too, holding her mom’s hand. Then, with a sudden jerk, the elevator stopped. The lights flickered and went out, leaving us in dim emergency light. The little girl started to cry.   My heart pounded like a hammer. I had never been trapped anywhere before. I wanted to scream too. But I looked at the crying girl, and something inside me straightened up. “It’s okay,” I said, my voice shaking but trying to be firm. “We just need to press the help button.” I reached out and pressed the yellow alarm button. A ringing sound echoed in the small space. Then a voice came from the speaker: “Hello, this is security. Are you stuck?” I explained our situation. The man said, “Stay calm. Help is coming in ten minutes.” 

  Ten minutes felt like ten hours. The little girl kept crying, so I sat down on the floor and told her a story. “Once upon a time, there was a brave rabbit who got lost in a dark cave…” I made up a silly story about the rabbit finding glowing mushrooms. As I spoke, her crying turned into sniffles, then into quiet listening. Her mother smiled at me gratefully. When the rescue team finally pried the doors open, bright light flooded in. I stepped out on shaky legs. The little girl hugged my leg and said, “Thank you, rabbit brother.” I laughed. That day, I learned that bravery is not the absence of fear. It is being afraid and still helping someone else. The elevator works fine now, but every time I step into it, I remember the dark box and the little girl’s hand in mine. Fear is a room, but kindness is the key.
