  The rain came suddenly, like a bucket of water poured from the sky. I was lucky—I had my small blue umbrella. I opened it and started walking home. The raindrops drummed on the umbrella like impatient fingers. Then I saw Xiao Hua ahead, walking slowly with his schoolbag over his head.   I hesitated. My umbrella was just big enough for one person. If I shared, we would both get wet. I looked at the puddles forming on the ground. I thought about how cold the rain felt on my own face when I forgot my umbrella last month. “Xiao Hua!” I called out, running toward him. “Come under my umbrella!” He turned around, surprised. Raindrops hung on his eyelashes like tiny tears. “Are you sure?” he asked. “There’s not much room.” “We’ll squeeze,” I said. 

  We walked side by side, our shoulders touching. The umbrella tilted toward him because I was taller. Soon, my left shoulder was completely wet, and water dripped down my arm. But Xiao Hua’s head was dry. He smiled at me. “Thank you,” he said. “You’re a real friend.” We talked all the way to his apartment building. His house was only one block away from mine. After that day, Xiao Hua and I became best friends. We played soccer together, shared snacks, and studied for exams. One rainy afternoon, he showed up at my door with a new, bigger umbrella. “This is for you,” he said. “Now we can both stay dry.” I laughed and took it. But secretly, I didn’t mind getting wet that first time. That shared walk in the rain taught me that friendship is not about comfort; it’s about showing up for someone even when it costs you a wet shoulder.
