  On the highest shelf of our living room, there is a thick, brown photo album. Its cover is worn, and some pages are loose. I had never paid attention to it until last Sunday, when I was looking for a book and pulled it down by accident.   I opened the first page. There was my father, young and thin, with wild hair and a big smile. He was holding a fish he had caught. I hardly recognized him. Next to the photo, my mother had written in blue pen: “Your father’s first fish, 1998.” I turned the page. There was my mother in a white dress, standing under a cherry blossom tree. She looked so young, so carefree. I had only seen her with tired eyes and an apron. Then came photos of me: a wrinkled newborn screaming in a blanket, a toothless baby eating birthday cake, a crying first-grader on the first day of school. Each photo had a small note in my mother’s handwriting: “First laugh,” “First step,” “First lost tooth.” 

  I sat on the floor for an hour, flipping through the pages. I saw birthdays, vacations, and ordinary Sundays. I saw my grandparents, who are now gone. I saw my old teddy bear, which now sits on my shelf with one eye missing. Tears came to my eyes, not because I was sad, but because I realized how much time had passed without me noticing. My parents were young once. They had dreams and adventures before I came. And yet, they chose to fill this album with me. I walked to the kitchen where my mother was chopping vegetables. “Mom,” I said, hugging her from behind. “Thank you for keeping the photos.” She turned off the stove and hugged me back. “Time flies,” she whispered. “But photos keep the landing spots.” That album is not just paper and ink. It is a time machine made of love.
