  The night before our primary school graduation, the sky was a deep velvet blue, scattered with diamonds. My best friend, Lin, and I sneaked out to the small hill behind the school. We lay on the cool grass, our heads close together, looking up at the Milky Way.

  “Can you believe we won’t be in the same class next year?” Lin whispered. A cricket chirped nearby. I felt a lump in my throat. We had been desk mates for three years. We shared lunches, secrets, and the same dream of becoming astronauts. “I’m scared,” I admitted. “What if we forget each other?” Lin pointed to the brightest star. “See that one? Let’s make a promise. Ten years from tonight, meet here, under that same star. No matter where we are.” I laughed and cried at the same time. “Ten years is a long time.” “Time is just a river,” Lin said. “But a promise is a bridge.” 

  We took out a time capsule we had prepared—a tin box with a letter to our future selves, a photo of us making silly faces, and a pebble from this hill. We buried it under the big oak tree. “In ten years, we will dig it up together.” That night, the stars seemed to lean down to listen. I know that people change, and life might take us to different cities or even different countries. But that starry night gave me a gift: the certainty that some friendships are like constellations—they may be far away, but their light still reaches you. I will keep the promise, not because I know the future, but because I want to honor the past. Goodbye, primary school. Hello, future. And Lin, I will see you under that star.
