  Chen Jie was my best friend. We sat together, ate lunch together, and walked home together. But one day, I ruined it. The art teacher chose her painting for the school exhibition instead of mine. I felt a hot, green feeling in my chest—jealousy. At recess, I told another classmate, “Chen Jie only won because her mom knows the teacher.” The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

  Of course, the words traveled. Within a day, Chen Jie heard them. She looked at me with hurt, confused eyes. “Did you say that?” she asked. I looked away and lied. “No.” But she knew. She stopped talking to me. She moved to another seat. I sat alone at lunch, watching her laugh with other friends. The green feeling was gone, replaced by a heavy gray rock in my stomach. I had not only hurt her; I had hurt myself. For three nights, I wrote apology letters and tore them up. They all sounded fake. Finally, my mother said, “An apology is not about perfect words. It’s about showing up.” 

  The next morning, I walked to Chen Jie before class. My voice was shaking. “I was wrong. I was jealous, and I lied. I’m so sorry. You deserved to win. Your painting was beautiful.” I held out a small notebook I had decorated with stickers—her favorite panda stickers. Chen Jie stared at me for a long time. Then tears filled her eyes. “Why did you say those things?” she whispered. “Because I was stupid,” I said. She laughed a little. “Yeah, you were.” Then she took the notebook. “I forgive you. But don’t do it again.” We hugged. That day, I learned that sorry is the hardest word to say, but it is also the most freeing. A friendship is like a glass vase—it can break, but if you pick up the pieces and glue them with honesty, it becomes even more beautiful, with golden cracks. Chen Jie and I are best friends again. And I promised myself: next time I feel jealous, I will talk to her, not about her.
