  Last winter, I came home with a 68 on my math test. I threw my backpack on the floor and buried my face in the pillow. Grandma didn’t say a word. She went into the kitchen. Soon, I heard the sound of chopping—rhythmic and calm. Then the sizzle of ginger in hot oil, the gurgle of water boiling. The soup’s fragrance crept into my room like a gentle hand. I sat up. Grandma brought a bowl to my desk. The steam fogged up my glasses. “Drink,” she said. “Numbers can wait. You cannot.” 

  I took a sip. The warmth spread from my throat to my chest. “Grandma, what’s your secret?” I asked. She sat beside me and stroked my hair. “The secret is not in the pot,” she smiled. “It is in the cooking. I peel each piece of ginger with care. I skim the foam off the top. I watch the fire and wait. Love is not a ingredient; it is the time you spend.” I looked at her wrinkled hands and realized that every bowl of soup carried hours of her patience. That night, I didn’t solve the math problems, but I slept peacefully. The next day, I studied harder and got a 85 on the retest. Grandma’s soup did not magically give me the answers, but it reminded me that I am loved, and that is the best fuel for trying again. Now, whenever I feel lost, I ask for her soup. And she always says, “Coming right up.”
